Unless otherwise noted, all of the information concerning

Spiritual Gifts has been compiled by me, John Lounsberry. It is my desire that you will benefit from this information.

My first introduction to a Biblical teaching on Spiritual Gifts was in a leadership conference of Basic Youth Conflicts on the campus of UCLA in 1971. Since then, I have come across other Bible teachers who have added their insight to my understanding of the subject.

The material presented here is a compilation of over thirty years of study and personal experience. Any place where an author or teacher is quoted directly will be noted with quotation marks and an acknowledgement of their contribution.

I would like to especially thank Jackson Snyder, for allowing us to use his Spiritual Gifts Survey.

EXHORTATION

People with the motivational gift of exhortation can have a dichotimous effect on those with whom they have the closest contact. Exhorters will normally be outgoing and have a personality that will draw other people to them. However, by their very nature, they seem to welcome trials of adversity for themselves and their friends. This is where frustration sometimes happens in their friends and family.

THE APOSTLE JAMES WAS AN EXHORTER
The apostle James stated best from an exhorter's viepoint when he said,
"Count it all joy when you fall into different kinds of trials and testing."

The exhorter has ingrained in his spirit that the way to maturity is through testing.
It's not that he enjoys going through problems and testings. Rather, a parallel can be drawn with the way that Jesus went through adversity as He laid down His life for us..

JESUS HAD HIS EYE ON THE REWARD
Jesus suffered the indignation and shame of the cross, so that He could provide a way for us to enter His kingdom. We are the reward for His suffering. It's amazing that He could love us so much that He would die for us.
This is the same attitude that exhorters will often have. They are willing to go through "all hell" in order to be made more into the likeness of Jesus. It is when someone with say, a gift of mercy, hears that it is necessary for people to suffer, that there is a battle within, regarding the need to experience adversity in order to grow into maturity. Everything in a "mercy person" is geared to helping and comforting those in need. This is where God's grace will do a work within yielded hearts.
WE NEED EACH OTHER
It is as we recognize the impacts of the various "giftings" of those around us, that we experience the start of our being fashioned as "living stones" into the body of Christ.
The exhorter is someone who will encourage and give help to those who are committed to "running the race". However, he will often have little patience with someone who is not willing to make a total commitment to God's call on their life.
